Collective brains = Zero

R and myself were in the city to get a couple of things and a brunch so late it was nearly lunch. I wanted to take a couple of photos in town so we came home separately. After comparing notes later, we both agreed there were some strange people on the tram home for both of us. "You are not a local person. You have no business in our street. Go home". In the meantime I wondered why there was a hovering helicopter. But we didn't click what they were about. R lay down on his bed and napped and missed the action; the helicopter, the chanting, the loud hailer and the police sirens.

They were anti vaxxers, anti lockdown, anti medical science, COVID non believers, anti government ****wits making a great fuss. They stopped trams running for more than an hour on the busiest tram street in the world. They caused traffic chaos north, south, east and west. Some motorists surrounded by protestors were no doubt apprehensive at least. Twenty people were arrested and charged or will be charged.

After the fuss was over, I went across the road to the rather newish and good Giro d 'Italia for coffee. Nine woman were sitting at two tables outside. It was another case of this is local place for local people. You are not welcome here. One had a protest sign leant up against a chair leg. I had sat down with a mask on and they must have noticed. At times I glared with hostility at them.

The former Federal Government Senator, AKA Famous Bearded Celebrity Resident also rather likes the same place for afternoon coffee and sits outside but today he was wisely hiding inside.

It is so easy for white people to pick on overseas born, especially overseas born females and of course that it was they did. To a passing young masked Asian woman, one said loudly, "Take your mask off. It will make you sick."

I took my mask out and hung one loop over my ear and they noticed. When I finished my coffee before rising from the table I slowly and defiantly masked up while staring at them and went to the window to pay. I had rehearsed in my head what I would say if they said anything, but of course an older white man is a little more challenging than a young overseas born young female. If the troup of like minded women had a collective brain, they might be dangerous.

  1. And sadly they are dangerous even without a brain. Too many people are at least considering the things they chant. And some of those people are in Government.

    2. EC, that some are in government AND TOLERATED is very disturbing.

  2. The antivaxxer movement and the white supremist movement seems to have become intertwined with each other. I wonder why. Do they think white people have some special immunity? Socially that's probably true, but not medically.

    1. Kirk, it is curious how all those things fit together. I really think most are just rebelling rather than believing their nonsense.

  3. These seem to be extreme right religious right types too - at least our homegrown versions are. Lemmings on the cliff edge of full on insanity.

    1. WWW, the sad thing is they will all benefit by us being vaccinated. There is less of a religious link here I think.

  4. And there’s you.....trying to stir them up :)
Good job my mother wasn’t with you....she’d have told you to ‘sit down and behave yourself - are you trying to start a riot!’

    1. Cathy, they were all around my age, not especially fit looking and I can still run.

  5. Anti vaxxers can always refuse to protect themselves against covid, mumps, TB, tetanus or any other medical problem. But they cannot endanger their children's lives, or the lives of their neighbours or workmates. Nor can they use public hospitals, doctors and nurses, once the anti-vaxxers become covid positive themselves.

    1. Hels, I think it is called social responsibility and we should be experts at that after the last twelve months.

  6. We had a crowd of marchers here in Adelaide too, I saw them on the 6pm news, but I don't know if any were arrested. What's all the hoo-ha about local places only for local people? That's ridiculous and bad for business too. Silly comment about masks making you sick too, doctors wear them for hours doing surgery, they don't get sick from them and neither do regular, non-medical people.

    1. River, its a line from a tv show. I have noticed medical staff while still wearing masks, have become a bit careless about the slipping and at times exposing their noses, or taking them off when alone but still visible.

  9. I blame social media for giving these nitwits traction - building confidence around absurd notions that are unresearched and obviously stupid. They just love their sense of superiority.

    1. YP, there is no doubt social media greatly aids such people to communicate. I hope they know what most sensible people think of them.

  13. I bet if asked they would have thought #45 was the second coming also! I did have a chuckle at the thought of you glaring at them over the top of your mask Andrew 😊 It's disappointing to think of so many Aussies thinking this way.

  14. Your mask will make you sick?! Ummmm...I'd like to see the medical research supporting THAT. Doctors and nurses wear them all day! It's amazing that so many people can be so clueless.

  15. In the European countries more and more people gather to protest against the lockdown ! After a year I think they are right at least for here in Belgium. It's so messed up, no organisation and no coordination. We are at the end of the list of vaccinated people together with Roumania ! Isn't that a compliment ?

  16. I've always wondered what how anti-vaxxers came into existence: is it because their lives are so comfortable they needed something to complain about? Why work on more humane treatment of refugees if you can whine about the steiner childcare centre not allowing un-vaccinated Tristian or Caliope through it's doors...? Idiots.

    1. Very amusing MM and here it does seem to be the more comfortable who are antivaxxers. I wonder what their attitudes would be if daily they could see kids with polio on the street.

Before you change something, find out why it is the way it is in the first place - unknown.
