Musical Monday 2, original or cover

Yes, again bumped to Tuesday.

The Easybeats were an Australian group and two of the members were Harry Vanda and George Young. George recently died, I think I saw on the evening news. They went on to be music producers in London and pumped out Kylie Minogue hits one after another, along with music and lyrics for many other artists. They wrote and recorded Friday on my Mind as The Beach Boys, but how much better did David Bowie perform the quite wonderful song.

Well, that is my opinion. You may disagree and I will think no less of you.

The lead singer is rather cute in the Easybeats version. Oh, he is dead, Stevie Wright, of Evie fame. Would you believe we heard that just today, as I am writing this, blaring out from a car in Flinders Lane in town.

Ok, you are all going to say you prefer the original version. Screw you. I reckon I have I have it right for next week's post though, and I have thought of another song that is contentious, original or cover.

  3. Bowie. Of course. And I am not (much) influenced by the thought of you thinking less of me.
Loved the images of his chameleon self in the clip too. He really did make an artform of reinventing himself.

    1. EC, some are great singers. Some are great performers. And some are great artists.

  5. Bowie had too great a fascination with Nazism for me to think about him or listen to his music. But we still remember the Easybeats' music and lyrics :) "She's so fine....."

  6. Easy beat version for me.
We don't always know that many singers go onto writing lyrics and melodies for others.

  10. You will never get an argument from me re anything to do with David Bowie. I love/loved Bowie. Saw him live in concert and he certainly didn't disappoint. His passing devastated me.

George Young passed away in October, 2017...and Malcolm Young of AC/DC fame passed away in November, 2017. Both played huge roles in the music industry...in Australia and elsewhere. The collaboration of Vanda and Young was unmatched.

    1. Lee, have you written about when you saw Bowie? I forgot that, Malcolm and George were brothers, yes? You go into the young people category.

    2. Yes...George, Malcolm and Angus were brothers...Scottish-born.

On the page/site below is a tribute to both David Bowie and Prince that I wrote on my blog back in April 2016.

    3. I was prepared to listen and maybe like the David Bowie version, but I just couldn't. I turned it off at 34 seconds.
Thank you for taking up Musical Monday.

    4. Lee, maybe I did something wrong, but I did enjoy the post about David Hackworth and Peter. Ah, I know. You put in the search link, not the blog post link.

River, that is fine. I do the same to music I don't like, some of which might have been yours. I am only using the title of Musical Monday. I'm not going to proactive about it. It was good that you were, along with Sunday Selections. We move on.

  11. Such different versions Andrew, the Easybeats tres upbeat, Bowie more dramatic, funny that 😀 I enjoyed both versions because basically it's such a cool song!

  12. Well this is one where the visuals make a difference too. If listening without watching, I'd choose the Bowie version but if watching the videos, I'd choose the Easybeats because of the enthusiasm of the young lead singer, just looks and acts like an exuberant teen and the enthusiasm is catching.

    1. Strayer, I agree with the lead singer. He is terrific. If you've not heard it, check out his solo performance Evie, part one, two and three. It is rather sad.
