Joining in with River for Musical Monday. My father had an annoying habit of whistling. He would use it alert people of his presence at times and often whistle to wake us up, at the time he got up, not the time we had to get up. Shut up, Dad.
But at times he whistled for sheer pleasure and sometimes he switched over to singing. His rendition of the first was pretty good. The second, his accent wasn't quite right but he clearly enjoyed singing it. Here are the couple songs he sang after breaking into them when whistling. We still told him to shut up.
This bloke's rendition of 'If I was a Rich Man' is rather good.
The other song was 'My old man's a Dustman'. I like both songs.
Andrew If I were a rich man is fantastic
ReplyDeleteGosia, great song sung very well by this performer.
DeleteWe got both of those songs in our house too. Father even bought the record of Fiddler on the Roof - a rare extravagance. Did you also get Harry Belafonte?
ReplyDeleteEC, that cursed Banana Boat Song. Yes, Father used to sing it, too often.
DeleteThe Banana song is used quite effectively in a scene in the movie Beetlejuice.
DeleteNever heard of the song..'My old man's a Dustman' Liked very much, and even going to posted on my facebook page.
ReplyDeleteCrikey Andrew ..... Great songs! My Mum loves musicals and Fiddler on the roof is one of her very favourites. Her old man was a coal miner. Some might think that's as bad as being the daughter of a dustman aye?? Have you heard that bloke that whistles the Elizabethan serenade. Roger Whittaker is his name. If I knew how to send you a link I would but look it up on youtube. My Dad plays it all the time. Drives me and Mum nuts. It is good to listen to. ONCE!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh and Andrew ..... we might not be commenting much from now on but we will try and keep up with what's going on in your world. Mum's eyes are playing up big time and she needs to rest them fr a bit.
DeleteCharlie, I think the miner is slightly above a dustman. I just had a listen. Whittaker is very clever but I understand your point about hearing it once, kind of like when you howl Charlie. Tell your Mum to look after herself.
DeleteIn the early Seventies I saw a stage production of "Fiddler on the Roof". It was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLee, I reckon it would be. It seems to be a long time since it has played in Australia.
DeleteBoth are sung well.
ReplyDeletePrefer Roger though but not a great fan.
Margaret, Roger doing what?
DeleteSinging of course, If I Were a Rich Man.
DeleteGreat songs both of them. My dad could whistle really well, I think it's the same sort of breath control needed to play harmonica, which he also did really well.
ReplyDeleteRiver, no one seems to whistle now. Is it a dying skill? I think you are right about the harmonica.
DeleteI've heard a few whistlers around here, older men mostly, there used to be a whistling busker in Rundle Mall, but haven't heard him for a few years now.
DeleteFortunately my father never sang ! People would have run away !
ReplyDeleteGattina, what about your rendition of If I were a Rich Man? Would your cats run and hide?
DeleteThat's the Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel singing If I Were A Rich Man. First time I've seen his interpretation. Very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteDeja vu Victor. I think I must have posted something by him once before, if not the same, and you made a similar comment. It is a problem related to blogging for a very long time. There will be some repetition.
