Amazon despatches

I can't embed this video so you will just have to click on the link to see a fascinating video of how the Amazon warehouse despatches goods to around the world. It is called a 'chaotic system' and while it appears chaotic with no ordered place to store goods, it works, thanks to Kiva robots.

Keep in mind this Texas warehouse could hold 16 football fields end to end.

Here is the link.

  1. Damn - that's unbelievably chaotic - almost like an "organized chaos" though, even though that's an oxymoron.

    1. Keith, an oxymoron it may be, but sometimes my life feels like organised chaos.

  3. I think the machines are taking over soon we will no longer be needed, I know these jobs are considered mundane but all the people who did them, what do they do now.
We are produce more people, less jobs can you see where this is going.

    1. Well Merle, things still have to be packed into boxes, which staff still do. Where are we going? A thirty hour week hopefully.

  6. That was interesting, all those robots picking and fetching. All this time I thought people were scurrying around getting stuff and packing it for shipping.

    1. River, while I can't say I really thought about it, I would have imagined that as you describe was how it worked. But I think staff still do the packing and shipping, just not the physical collection from the shelves.

  7. That was fascinating and slightly scary at the same time, :) thanks Andrew! Apart from anything else.. wow, so many people around the world ordering from Amazon. I heard some bad things about Amazon a while back, just can't remember what they were now!

    1. Grace, I don't think the workers get paid very well. Apart from that, I don't know. I've bough a couple of things from Amazon and never had problems.
