I have my own fond memory of a New Zealand fountain in Dunedin on the South Island. I am googling as I speak as can't even remember its name. Got it, Star Fountain. Damn, it has been demolished.
It was quite kitsch, I suppose, but it amused me with its synchronised lights, bright classical music and water jets. The area known as The Octagon was renovated in the 1990s and the fountain never reinstated, in spite of local agitation. I do rather agree that during the day, the pipes were not the most attractive thing. Too early for You Tube, methinks, but here are some photos.
The first one looks more like a kids water park tan a fountain. The second one is pretty good.
ReplyDeleteDiane, I think it is something that any visitor to Wellington would stop to watch, and the locals probably moan about the stupid thing.
Delete"Damn, it has been demolished". You can say that again :( Everything beautiful or historically significant is pulled down.
ReplyDeleteAs you know Hels, we are at one with that.
DeleteI have never seen such a bucket fountain, I don't even know what to think about it, it looks a bit as if it would rather belong on a children's playground !
ReplyDeleteGattina, childish yes, but what fun. Even grown ups can have fun.
DeleteI love the 'bucket fountain' in Cuba Street. It gave me a bit of a shock, I was walking down Cuba St looking at the buildings and taking photos of any that were Art Deco style when all of a sudden I heard this almighty crash of water right behind me just like the video. It was certainly a case of move quickly and ask questions later although, in truth, I was not in danger of getting wet but I didn't know that.
ReplyDeleteHehe David. I think that is exactly what the fountain is about. Cuba Street does sound like it might have Art Deco buildings. Did it?
DeleteI'll accept your word on the bucket fountain as I'm not watching you tubes. I can imagine how pretty the octagon fountain would be at night.
ReplyDeleteIt was wonderful River. The music and the lights were all in time with the water jets.
DeleteHaha! The bucket fountain is surprising and a lot of fun. I agree it is shame about the Star fountain, it had a sort of Hollywood style charm about it oui!
ReplyDeleteGrace, perhaps the type to be seen in the casino area of Las Vegas.
