The Answer

Well done Marcellous who obviously knew but did not say directly in comments but cleverly alluded to the answer with his line Sweet Georgia on my Mind. I expect Hels would have known too.

The nice looking man next to Zayn Malik is the not so nice Joseph Stalin and I don't think I have to tell anyone who he was, but if you don't know he led the old Soviet Union for three decades from the mid 1920s and he was born in the country Georgia.

  1. I had no idea that Stalin was such a good looking man. It seems wrong somehow (which is silly of me).

    2. Meh, I've seen better, and while he does look ok, there's just something I can't pinpoint that puts me off.

  3. Good grief, hard to believe that such a nice looking man could be so dreadful. Just can't judge a book by it's cover!

  4. I knew what young Stalin looked like, only from the book by historian Simon Sebag Montefiore. Otherwise we only recognise the older, shrivelier images of Stalin.

    1. Hels, his internal ugliness came out in his later looks.

  10. As one of Stalin's friends said at his funeral, "Joe, we hardly knee ye." Meaning, we knew you and it was extremely hard on us."

    1. Interesting Cynthia. Perhaps it like when an adult child commits a serious crime but still the parents support him.

  11. Bloodthirsty Stalin. There're people around the world still paying for his crimes, generations after he died.

    Greetings from London.

    1. Cuban, I am sure there are still paying. Putin is a product of what Stalin set up. Look after yourself in London.

  13. My late Father in Law was a British diplomat; based at one time in Moscow. He had dealings with Stalin. He said he was a 'difficult man'.
