No comment emails

Along with my lost post last week, which I put down to European Union notice, which is probably not true, last Friday, the next morning, there were no comments on my posts. Nobody was loving me at all, not one. Even the evil spammer Jorbeth was absent. Well, that was as far as I knew.

Comments were still being made, but I was not receiving emails that a comment had been made. I know well enough that something like this is nothing I have done and just wait for it to be corrected, nevertheless, I did check my blog settings and all appeared to be well.

As an aside from the problem, today I discovered why I don't receive emails when River or Grace comment. It is because they use Yahoo email addresses. Apparently Blogger hates Yahoo email and does allow it into its system. There are one or two other people who comment on my blog and I don't receive emails when they do so. It is only really a problem when a regular reader gets behind reading my blog and comments on a post perhaps two or three days old. I may miss it then.

Ok, back to the point, no emails when someone comments. Many in a forum do think it is related to the European Union Notice. While this below does not fix the problem, it is a work around for you if you are having the same problem. Here was a helpful response I received from Darnell Knauss on the forum.

I'm not sure if this will be permanent or temporary, but a reader to my blog discovered the change in the comment box itself that "fixes" this problem. Immediately after you publish your post, leave YOURSELF a comment. You will see the sign in options have changed and there is now a box to check that allows delivery of comments to our email boxes! Just check the box, publish your comment and all comments to your blog post after that will come to your inbox as before. It's infuriating that Blogger didn't tell us this, but there you go!

  1. If you have, as you do, embedded comments with the reply option you don't even need to comment. Just tick the notify me box.

    1. EC, ok. I did try using that for a few posts some time ago but it just didn't work as well for me.

  2. After reading this post I realised I haven' been receiving bloggers emails. I assume it is the new regulations about data protection that were introduced on 25th May with regard to emails. Thanks for the tip O will try and correct if I can.

    1. Marie, the data protection that no one other than the authors seem to understand.

  3. What is this black magic of emails of which you speak?!
Carrier pigeons were good enough for my ancestors and they're good enough for me.
Plus, jugged squab is delicious with steamed dandelions and crouch grass.

  4. Crikey Andrew .... I just comment. I knew about that box but I never tick it. I get enough emails already. I just read the comments on my blog. You must get 87 million emails.

    1. Margaret, but you would miss a comment on an older post, and they can be quite interesting to look back on at times.

    2. That’s true I might miss a comment, I do go back occasionally and see, of course I would still miss some..

  6. I don't know why you need email notification of comments. Can't you just check back on the blog itself later in the day and read the comments then?

    1. River, as above. Some of the things I write about are of interest to anyone and pop up in Google when they are searching and they make comments, sometimes years later.

  7. I've been reading other blogs where the authors have complained about the same issue.
I think I'd like to receive notification of comments in another way than having to check the blog all the time - which I do because that's the way w/p does it (automatically) - even if they arrive about 30 mins later.
Just have to clear the inbox now and again lol

    1. Cathy, I understand Wordpress is so customisable, and I would be surprised if there is not a setting to do that. I normally publish at 5.00. A comment might arrive at 5.01 and I will have an email telling me so. I will reply at 5.02 and still at 5.02, my reply will be in my email inbox.

  8. The last thing I want are Emails clogging my inbox telling me that someone has commented on my blog. I can't think why you would want them!

  9. It's annoying for you but I am happy that I am not the only one and you have it too ! I get all emails but NO comment emails. I also thought nobody loves me anymore until I discovered that Blogger or Google have stopped sending me comments in my email my settings are also all OK. I tried to get in contact with Blogger and also complained in a Google Help Forum, but so far nothing happened it's since the 27th May !!

    1. Gattina, it is clearly a Blogger problem and we just have to wait for it to be rectified. Given it is a free service, we don't have much power.

  10. I know you don't get email notifications from moi because I always look back and you sometimes miss my comments which is a pity especially if it was a particularly clever response 😀😀😀😀

    1. Grace, I try hard to check back, and sometimes it is a good bit later when I see your comments and I do reply. Maybe I have missed a few. With this temporary solution to the problem, I am getting your comments straight away now. So sorry girlfriend for missing any of your witty responses. I know you can bitch as good as a thirty year old street smart gay guy. That's a compliment, as I am sure you know.

  11. Hey, thanks for clarifying on this post, Andrew. I was wondering why I wasn't getting 'comment emails' either.

    1. Sandra, one very good reason for writing it. It will also stop people fiddling with their settings and breaking something.

  12. It's funny you should mention this because I suddenly had no blog comments. I receive notification through yahoo email. It was the same day of the European notice too. That's why I mentioned I felt invisible again, to you, I think, and you said I wasn't. I stumbled across unpublished comments when checking settings. Usually they are all in one place, but now they are divided into published and unpublished. There, without the usual notification by email, were a few comments. I suddenly felt better, visible again at least to my few readers.

    1. Strayer, well you did point out that you thought the European notice would cause trouble, and it has.

  14. I had the same problem. No email comments. Then I looked at Blogger's Comments section and found them all in the Awaiting Moderation section. Not loving that.
