Meanwhile in Switzerland

A very nasty result when a truck crashed into a tram in Basel, Switzerland. But trams are still an extremely safe way to travel.

  1. Andrew I agree with you trams are safe means of transport. I use them every day

    1. Gosia, you and many old people, no doubt and without a problem.

  2. Very unfortunate.
I love trams and always make it a point to travel in it when visiting Calcutta (the only city in India where trams are still plying)

    1. Haddock, sadly the Calcutta system seems to be dying by attrition. There must once have been so many trams in India.

    1. Lady J, while I prefer trains because they are faster, trams are great places to people watch. Especially now as you never get caught looking as everyone is staring at their phones.

  4. European cities that didn't demolish their tram systems were very wise.

If trucks and trams have to compete for the same road space, ban trucks from entering the city except between eg 10 PM-6 AM. Protect trams, protect passengers.

    1. Hels, from my knowledge, former Eastern European cities do trams best as they haven't overcomplicated them. The are simple, fast and frequent, as Gosia above would say.

  5. I hope everything was okay after that crash! Ironically, Switzerland is on my bucket list to visit, so I read about it whenever I can. Hugs...RO

    1. RO, it is an amazing country, but the cost of visiting scares me.

  6. I saw that on the news and I believe no one was killed, but a few were injured. I think a concrete barrier between road and tram line would go a long way to preventing this happening again. But it's the sort of thing that needs to be constructed as the tram line is laid, very expensive to add it later.

    1. River, while I didn't see it, also I don't believe anyone was killed or seriously hurt. Generally in Europe there is good separation between vehicles and trams, but clearly not good enough in this case.

  8. That looks nasty. Here in America Amtrak, our only passenger train system, has had several major injury or death inducing crashes in the last months. The latest back east when an Amtrak train crashed into a sitting still freight train. Both engineers were killed.
