R knew all about it. It is the Pop Up Globe Theatre where Shakespearean plays are performed, though not as straight Shakespeare. Shakespeare for the masses, I suppose.
It's a massive construction and clearly has to withstand storms, but it is only temporary. We couldn't get to the other side as it is the ticketed area but I have a feeling it is partly open to the elements. It is not especially cheap to see a performance there, but still, I hope it is successful. You can view some details of the performances here.
How's your back today?
ReplyDeleteConsiderably better, thanks John.
DeleteWhat a clever idea. And echoing John Gray. I hope your back is much, much better. It has been giving you grief for too long.
ReplyDeleteThanks EC. It is something to do with the way I sleep at times that seems to set it off. Two steps forward, one back. It is nothing like as bad as it was earlier.
DeleteThat certainly appears to be a solid construction for a "pop-up" temporary construction.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear your back is a lot better...and I hope it keeps getting betterer! :)
Lee, I think it is mostly corrugated iron, which I am sure you know. Work training at work today. That is for me after 38 years of doing the same job. The most interesting thing was learning about the ICE epidemic (expect a post), but sitting in such bad chairs did not help my back. It will get betterer.
DeleteWhat a bizarre idea. It looks to be quite some building, so one can only wonder why they didn't build something permanent. Does it pop-down again, and move to another location?
ReplyDeleteCro, these are important public gardens. We can't build anything permanent. We already take up way too much public space with statues of Queen Victoria. I don't think it will travel elsewhere, just taken apart for salvage.
Delete"Shakespeare for the masses I suppose" That sounds like snobbery, but I think that anything that gets people seeing Shakesperae's plays is a good thing. And how exactly does "Shakespeare for the masses differ from "straight Shakespeare"? Is it 'dumbed down' so we non-literary lowbrows can understand it? Because, again, that's a good thing and might encourage some people, who aren't me, to look into learning more.
ReplyDeleteRiver, I saw a Shakespeare once when I was at school. It created such an impression, I can't even remember the title. Maybe Much Ado About Nothing, perhaps. So appropriate. The impression I get is that these plays are played loud, rambunctious with over the top acting, over the top but flimsy sets and all a lot of fun. But really, I dunno.
Delete"....loud, rambunctious with over the top acting...." is probably what draws people in, and bums on seats is what it's all about. With so much bad going on these days, people need something that makes them laugh until they pee their pants. Stress relief.
ReplyDeleteRiver, no one ever felt worse after a good laugh.
DeleteA temp building that withstands storms, that is amazing@
ReplyDeleteStrayer, we are pretty clever with sheets of tin.
