Funny Friday

We ignorant Australians don't know much about European politics. Here is what I think I know about Chancellor Merkel of Germany. Correct my errors at your will. She was born and lived in the old East Germany. She has a husband but that does not mean she is not a wearer of sensible shoes. She was a scientist. Her spoken English language skills are poor or heavily accented so she does not speak English in public. She is seen as extremely dull and boring by other western countries. She let in a lot of Arab immigrants and many Germans were not so happy about this, but perhaps through their prosperity, they will wear that.

The Chancellor remains a bit of an enigma to many of us.

In the 1990s we used to see Tracy Ullman and Ruby Wax on our tv. That was before our ABC tv was dumped by Britain's BBC in favour of a commercial television here. It seems Tracy Ullman goes on and on. Here is she recently playing Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel when visiting Britain for Brexit talks. This is not hilarious, just clever and a little biting. 2:00

  1. Not for me this time - perhaps because I am largely ignorant about Angela. (And so many other things.)

    1. EC, that is rather my point, that we are quite ignorant about her and the clip gives a little insight into how things are played.

  2. That's funny. I sometimes would like to be a fly on the wall to hear what these world leaders speak in private or even to themselves.

    1. Pretty unpleasant conversations, Strayer, if they are with you know who.

  3. Merkel is one, brave woman!

Trump’s aggression and lying hasn’t gone over well in Germany. After the NATO meeting, Merkel and her political rival, the German Social Democrat leader, both stated that Europe can no longer rely on old alliances and must unite in response to Trump. And at a German conference on Tuesday, after a video feed of Commerce Secretary's rambling speech criticising German trade policy was unceremoniously cut off, Merkel took the stage to hit back at the Trump administration with cold, hard facts (Vanity Fair).

    1. Hels, there is much to admire about the Chancellor. That Trumpet can bring about agreement within the two opposing German parties is quite some achievement.

  5. Many Brits view her as bitter towards the UK. Having started, and lost, two world wars can't have been easy for Germany, and they don't easily forget.

    1. Ah Cro, I think you made me laugh more than the clip did.

  6. Again, I'll have to set up the other laptop to listen. It doesn't surprise me that she is against Trump, Germans as a rule don't like to be bullied. You could probably say they prefer to do the bullying given the world war records.

    1. River, I think German is one of the best defences the world has against the excesses of Trumpet. I thoroughly approve of Merkel standing up to him.

    1. Grace, I thought it pretty clever. I think the clip was made just pre Trump times.

  8. As I never lived in Germany as an adult, I know Merkel only from the Belian newspapers. She is very appreciated in general and I don't think she is boring. Her English is certainly good only she has to speak German in public, as the others have to speak in their mothertongue too. That makes Europe so complicated !

    1. Gattina, usually world leaders use a common language between each other, if they have one, like Macron from France and Trudeau speak French.
