Word Censorship

Moments earlier, the man stopped outside Revellers Bar when he heard James Bruce say "my n-----", Melbourne Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday.

This is a snip from The Age. James Bruce and his brother beat a black man severely. They are before the courts and the legal system and given they have pleaded guilty, we can only hope they are dealt with severely. A third brother tried to stop the assault.

Still, what could be worse than a foster father killing his twelve year old foster daughter, as is alleged happened in Queensland. Also alleged is that she may have been pregnant to her foster parents' son. Twelve years old, she was. Horrid.

We had our own words to describe our native population for which we should be ashamed, such as boong, gin, lubra and more but so far as I know, nigger has not generally been used in Australia, aside from as a reference to American blacks. Perhaps American blacks is now too unacceptable. I probably should say, those of African American heritage.

But what I take issue with is The Age reporter, or The Age editorial committee, or the sub editor, which I believe has been outsourced to a New Zealand company,  not printing the word nigger as part of reportage. Clearly nigger is an ugly and loaded word, but that is not a reason not to print the word when quoting.

  1. I really don't know what using the abbreviated version was supposed to achieve. Yes it is an ugly word, but hiding ugliness doesn't make it go away.
That story from Queensland is horrendous. If it is true presumably the foster father killed the child to protect his son. And no punishment will bring the child back. Or alter what she endured.

    1. EC, for sure the hiding of the word does not make things better. I think you have the slant on QLD correct.

    2. And the son may well go on to abuse other foster children; will his father kill all of them just to "protect" him? That boy needs counselling, and quickly.

  2. That's only playing with the word ! far worse is what they have done. We had a case here yesterday, with white people, the mother locked out her 6 year old son on the balcony and it wa - 4°C. Nobody saw the child and it died after 15 h !!! There is no color to be evil !

    1. OMG Gattina. That is awful. Yesterday a child in Sydney died from the heat after being left in a car. I think the family was long Australian.

  3. Oh dear! More child abuse, and having read it, it cannot be unread. it is in my brain forever :(

I have a friend who continues to use the derogatory terms for indigenous people and for African Americans, also for Asians he has nasty names. Many times I've told him to leave my home if he's going to talk like that, and off he goes, slamming the door. It mostly depends on what state of mind he is in if something has triggered an outbreak, but I tell him that's no excuse. They are all people and if he doesn't like that, he can stay away.

    1. Sorry River. I am quite amused that this person leaves you place in a huff, but then does come back again. I at times say something, but sometimes you are just in the wrong crowd and vastly outnumbered.
