What's in a name #27

This is from an Australian tv show about advertising, The Gruen Transfer, 2.53. My Friday posts are supposed to contain an element of humour. Perhaps you will be a little amused.

I am reminded of a Queensland town where a friend briefly lived, Yorkeys Knob, no doubt a familiar place to at least one of my blogmates (fingers crossed she doesn't actually live there). Mentioning the name among us would always elicit a smutty remark, or perhaps just a tone in a voice. It is the 'eys' that makes it funny. Not much humour in York Knob or even York's Knob. But Yorkeys Knob, snigger.

  1. Video won't play for me says it contains content from the Australian Broadcasting company and isn't available here.

    1. Strayer, welcome to Australia tv. Oh, sorry, you are not welcome. Yes, must be geoblocked. Silly really for a couple of minutes that could promote the show.

  2. Have always been a fan of the road in the Blue Mountains called "Curly Dick Road". The first time I saw it I laughed out loud.

    1. James, I am pleased I did not have coffee in my mouth when I read this. Flannel Flower Fairway rather appeals to me.

  3. Video wouldn't work for me either... that's okay though; I don't live far from Gobbler's Knob. =D

    1. That's a good one Jac. There must be some great names in the US. I wonder how Gosia below can watch the video.

    1. Gosia, I suppose every country has funny names like English speaking countries.

  5. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. And am shuddering thinking of what John Grey could do/would do with Flannel Flower fairway. Titswobble Road is a gem too.

    1. EC, yes, fancy living on that Titswobble Road and having to give out your address.

  6. Yorkey's Knob is funny. There are a few funny street names here in SA too, I see them when I'm surfing the Real Estate sites. I wouldn't ever move to a town called Asbestos. I'm giggling at Titswobble Road too, I'd probably not move there unless I had no other choice.

    1. River, I wonder if Titswobble Road and Curly Dick Road intersect? No one would believe you if you said you lived on the corner of those two roads.

  7. Go Gruen!!!

My favourite names are Nether Wallop and Clifford's Bottom in the UK. Anything to do with arses is funny :)

    1. Hels, none are coming to mind now, but I am sure there are worse names in England than those two. Mind, I do like Nether Wallop.

    1. Merle, sometimes a little obscurity is not a bad thing. Naturally people my age do know of Granville for one tragic reason.
