Computer Rage

Is is because I upgraded to Windows 10 a week ago? All had been well with the exception of the printer. It would print but I had to download a new driver for it to scan.

Sunday I came home from work to a lovely clean home. R had performed his domestic duties and the place was sparkling, including the desk and everything that sits on it, including the computer. I switched it on and what had happened? The icons on the desktop were huge and everything was fuzzy. Some things were out of proportion. I've now spent several hours trying to fix it and it has me beat. I've googled a lot too but nothing has been helpful. This had happened before but not for a long time and I can't remember how I fixed it. This time it seems unfixable.

I've tried every screen resolution possible. The graphics card and its driver seem to be ok. It is how I remember computers when they start up in safe mode, except clearly it isn't as everything is working perfectly. I've fiddled with the monitor settings, thinking maybe R knocked something when he was dusting. I've tried many other things too. I tried to go back to restore point, but it seems by default that is switched off when you download Windows 10. I could revert to Windows 7, which would not matter or reload Windows 10, but neither is guaranteed to fix the problem.

So some of you can sit back and say in reference to switching to Windows 10, I told you so. I have something ready to post tomorrow but I may be a little invisible for a bit.

  1. Sigh. Good luck. I really, really hope you find a solution. And am glad that I am slow, lazy and cautious.

  2. Try right clicking on the desktop screen.. hover your mouse over view, you should see a side window pop up with large icons, medium icons, small icons. :) does that help at all? :)

    1. Snoskred, no. Small or large, the icons are fuzzy but thanks.

  3. I won't say I told you so, but I will say there will be no windows 10 happening here.
    Have you tried Snoskred's advice?
Or you could open any page you want, then hold down control while clicking the - until it reduces to the size you want.

    1. River, yes, but it is more complicated than just the icon sizes. Everything about the screen is just wrong.

  5. Bwahahahaha! Told you so!
Everything is set up for dumb ipads, iphones, tablets and I hated it with a passion and had the same trouble with the printer. I went from XP to 8.1 then 10 and back. With XP, I could go through my photos, tick which I wanted to print, 10, 15, 20 and it would do so but now I can only print one at a time and I have to know the weight of the paper, the gloss of the paper and the ratio of swearing to actual printing.
I like my big screen desktop and big keyboard where my fingers fit on the keys. I tried asking HP for help with the printer, don't bother, they give you a manager with password, that's now deleted as well.

    1. Jah Teh, there are some improvements I have noticed, but really, not enough to warrant changing. Quite so, you will never get help from the companies but the kindness of strangers is always nice.

    1. Cold is nearly over. Can't say the same for R who is an awful complainer when he is unwell.

  7. Oh dear me.
You know there also could have been an upgrade of the Windows 10. You know the normal downloads/upgrade done every now and then automatically if chosen that way.

I had a problem the other day, had a message come up, nothing I could do to fix it. Used my laptop to search for a clue, found one. I, when restarted PC just had to press F8 (safe mode) on startup, didn't go to safe mode, but my computer started properly and has done since :)
For you, could it be that simple?

    1. Margaret, it seems you are exactly correct about updates. I had an inkling of this after reading Windows 10 problems. By this morning, it had returned to how it was. I am somewhat annoyed by the waste of my time and the stress. It seems one update can quickly follow another which corrects problems caused by the first update. Updates is about to be switched off.

  9. I've got a Mac, but still I always hold my breath when installing an upgrade. On my phone and iPad, too. I love when one of the benefits of upgrading is "bug fixes." I upgrade and have NEW bugs. Good luck!
