Towns I would not like to live in

This is a post going nowhere. Clearing up.

They may be very nice towns, but the name puts me off. This has been compiled over some time as I hear town names.

Let me start with the newish Melbourne suburb called Doreen. I associated it with a frumpy, stupid, niave Australian country girl from the 1920s.Was there a Doreen in the Dad and Dave movies?

England now, Scunthorpe and Skegness. The sk/c sound must be the problem.

Bogside in Ireland.

  2. Hmmm, I'd prefer not to have to put these towns as a return address: French Lick, Lick Skillet, Toad Hop, Gnawbone, Gobbler's Knob, and Floyd's Knobs. All relatively local town names...

    1. Jac, quite a collection. I just could not cope with Gobbler's Knob. We do have a Yorkies Knob in Australia and a geographic formation called The Nut.

  3. Whats in a name? Quite a lot. Often. You are right about Doreen as a suburb. I have never known a Doreen, and perhaps if I had I would feel differently about it. And love Jacs collection.

    1. Merle, we have a few of those, Cranbourne Crimebourne comes to mind. A friend lived for a while in Sydney's Ashfield and called it Hashfield.

  5. Doreen is the girl in CJ Dennis's series of poems published together as 'The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke' which was made into a (silent) film 'The Sentimental Bloke' in the 1920s - no, I looked it up - in 1919.

It's all online so you can read bits if you are feeling homesick for a long-gone Melbourne while you are away.

    Bon voyage!

    1. Marcellous, I think I mixed up some different information, CJ Dennis poems and Dad and Dave movies. I won't be feeling THAT homesick. Thanks.

    1. Susie, I am greatly amused. Think of the word play you could have.

  7. This is something I haven't thought about in ages. There was a time I thought it might be nice to live in Rainbow, Victoria.

    1. River, isn't it near Mildura? Stinking hot in summer and cold north wind in winter.
