Tram Ads

Our full advertising trams can look wonderful, from the outside. God forbid if you are a passenger and want to see where you are going, through the dimming advertising. If it is wet, it is even worse. Darkness, you better damn well know where you want to get off the tram. Wet and dark, you may as well be in windowless prison. These are public transport vehicles and passengers need to be able to see outside. It is an utter disgrace that Yarra Trams allow this for a few filthy shillings.  Nevertheless, as I said, some look good from the outside.

The Samsung one is my favourite at the moment.


Off topic, but what is this monster thing doing in my street.

I think the other side of this tram is better, with an underwater scene, but still, the Malaysia Tourism is very nice.

  3. I think they look fabulous, but they do restrict the view for passengers. Perhaps they could find a way to make the window sections a little less opaque. Even without these advertisements, it is often hard to see where you are in the dark and wet of winter.

  4. All-over advertising is simply the ultimate insult to those who pay most towards the costs of running public transport systems, namely the passengers. I am convinced, when comparing pre-1970/80 designs of buses, trams and trains to those of today, that the main user of these vehicles is not even considered at the design, or, indeed, any, stage. It must look sleek and sexy from the outside (with the exception of the appalling Siemens sardine tins) with no regard to the interior design, which comes much later to a separate set of ‘standards’. The only saving grace in the ‘Extrapolis’ trains is their narrow window pillars, otherwise they’re much like the Siemens and even the ‘Comeng’ sets where too many ‘window’ seats are aligned with thick window pillars. For outward vision the ‘Combino’ trams are a disgrace and in the few cases where the outside vision is not obscured by supposedly ‘see through’ advertising’ the idiotic ‘sweeping curves’ livery uses non-transparent vinyls over the exact spot passengers would expect to be able to look out of the tram. This, of course, applies to all tram types but in my mind the ‘Combino’ trams start with an inherent design handicap anyway. I’ve used them in both Amsterdam and Potsdam and, well, while they may be good at carrying hundreds of commuters that know their stops from the track sounds and the way the tram lurches at particular places they’re no damn good when it comes to visitors unsure of quite where they need to alight. So, given the user-unfriendly design of the interiors, they then add another level of unfriendliness by blurring the outside view with advertisements for all sorts of things, like cars, petrol and so on that are ultimately the enemy of public transport. It’s frankly a surprise that there are passengers on trams and buses, not to mention the stupidity of V-Line also covering its railcars’ windows. If I’m sitting in a ‘quiet coach’ that’s fine but if I can’t make telephone calls and want to look out of the window, … I don’t have the number but I have seen, on several occasions, a tram on the tourist-oriented City Circle service that is covered, roof to solebar including windows, with all-over advertising. Great for sightseeing.

    1. Chris, you have expanded on my point very well. Elsewhere I mentioned the covering over of the City Circle tram with advertising. It is a disgrace for a vehicle that you should be able to see out of, as the commentary guides you.

      Please don't confirm that V Line covers its windows with ads.

  6. I am utterly committed to our trams system.. they are clean, silent, don't use petrol, are mostly on time and are an historic part of this city.

    But I must be getting old. What happened to plain dark green, glidinging along tree lined St Kilda Rd and Royal Parade?

    1. Mostly silent Hels, certainly much quieter than buses.

      From above the old trams would glide. On board, they rattled and were freezing cold in winter.
