I will call you back in a minute, said Tradie Brother. He returned my call in a few minutes. Highrise protocol has evolved to if one person is watching television, you leave the room to speak on the phone.
I've always loathed phones, though now live in a world where they are "essential". TO is one of those people who simply cannot not answer. My own theory has always been if it's important they'll leave a message with a phone number, or call back. Just because someone rings they should not assume we are eagerly awaiting their call or are obliged to spend time talking to them. They would not turn up at someone's house and just walk in without being invited, would they? Oh.
Fuck off to make or answer a call? More like don't FKN bother ringing unless you a) ask if it's a good time to call or something similar b) have something worth saying.
Don't have a loud irritating ring tone in public, turn the wretched thing off in theatres etc, don't talk on the phone if you are at my dinner table, don't sit in meetings texting or talking... rude, rude, rude, rude, rude.
FC, someone can text you to see if it is ok to call you? I too dislike telephone calls, whereas an email or text gives you time to consider and you don't have to make snap decisions that you may later regret. I think people are now much better about phone ring tones. Often they answer a call and you haven't heard the phone ring.
Hello Andrew:
ReplyDeleteLucky you. In our experience calls are seldom returned!!
JayLa, he is my younger brother. I would simply box his ears if he did not return my call.
DeleteLeaving the room so as not to disturb the viewing pleasure of others is just plain good manners.
ReplyDeleteRiver, it took someone in the Highrise, not me, time to learn that.
DeleteAbsolutely. That's why phones are cordless!
ReplyDeleteExactly Kath. Fuck off to make your call.
DeleteDitto above! Although I do a lot of 'not hearing' the phone in the evening..and then the fighting begins..
ReplyDeleteGrace, R and I both try to not hear the phone. You answer it, no you answer it. One of us eventually gives in. And then the fighting begins.
DeleteHaha!
