Extra Special

Two brilliant photos recently published on Shorpy. Be sure to click them to see them full size.

The Young Moderns was taken after the people have eaten and they have full wine glasses. I can only speculate that a brouhaha is about to begin.

Midnight Special  is a very moody and atmospheric black and white photo of a steam train, subtitled "Freight train about to leave the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad yard for the West Coast."

  1. Hello Andrew:
We were intrigued with one of the comments on The Young Moderns which suggests that the man in the suit could be recently escaped from Hungary although 1952 is perhaps slightly too early for that. Had the photograph been dated 1956, then a more plausible suggestion!

    1. JayLa, I did not read the comments and how wonderful that you did. I have just read them and I realise that not only myself was very impressed with the photo.

  2. I like the Midnight Special. I'm remembering lying in bed on summer nights and hearing the far away whistles from trains as they neared towns and bridges.

    1. River, I wish I could remember the same, but I was a long way from a train line where I grew up. Reminder to self, read train book by Patsy Adam Smith.

  3. Old photos are very interesting. Trying to work out what they are all about like the commenters on the first photo. The train is a great shot.

    1. Diane, I am just so impressed at the clarity of the photos from so long ago. The family shot looks quite posed. How on earth did they make the train smoke look like back then?

  4. The family shot does not look posed to me. It's interesting to read the comments underneath - and see we will all have totally different takes on the photos.

The family is so used to having their photo taken they are ignoring the photographer completely. The body language is interesting. "Dad"? is lecturing and what he says is what he expects everyone to abide by. Fair enough, too, cos every one else is a half-wit. "It's hard being a genius in a mediocre world" [Lily Tomlin]

Daughter? is adding the lecture to dad's list of crimes against humanity. Son/ beau [next to daughter] has an air of "don't care what he thinks, but I'm enjoying the drama".

"Mother?" has her eyes closed. She hates these meals, and the lectures, and the headaches the family dynamics cause. If she didn't have a headache she could lie down with a nice yarn from True Confessions.

The train shot is really something.

    1. FC, I like how you have interpreted the photo, as I like others' interpretations. I still think it is going to end badly.

  5. Both good shots Andrew, like the second better and love it's title!
