Me? Sexist & Shallow?

Photos are from The Age. This is probably a somewhat sexist post. I should be focusing on the political aspirants and not their wives. But other do politics so much better than I ever could, so I just go for the easy option, women's looks.

No one could accuse Michelle Obamba of being a stunningly beautiful woman. She is very fit though. She recently out push upped Ellen Degeneres with twenty five push ups. Not a bad effort for a woman of her age. She does make the best of herself from perhaps not the highest starting base.

But the presidential challengers who battle between themselves for a chance to go against Obama both have wives. Romney's wife may well have had a little nip here or a tuck there, but she does look relatively normal in spite of the absurd sleeve cuffs.

For the really weird and truly scary, you have to go to Gingrich's third and current wife. My dear Americans, do you really want this pair as President and First Lady?

  1. The Newt and wife photo is such a perfect example of how I see them. Totally plastic people with a look of evil in their eyes. Mitt's wife is rather more sophisticated but please, she is little more than a trophy wife. Michelle now, she seems to be so very much a woman of her own mind with a strong sense of style and a good deal of intelligence. Interesting how I've taken to these folks on a first name basis isn't it? That's what we American tend to do though. :)

  2. The first name think is interesting Rubye. I would say Barack or Barack Obama, but Gingrich and Romney. Meaning I guess, we use first names for who we like and save the surnames for those we don't.

  3. Actually, in this context I use first names for those who should not be taken seriously. However, I do respect Michelle in spite of her being the first lady and getting down on the floor and doing push-ups on national television. I enjoyed the humor but really is nothing sacred anymore?

  4. Populism can be a very dangerous tool for politicians and their partners. Mind you Barack did look genuinely amused when he fired off the marshmallow cannon.

  5. Maybe the camera captured the third Mrs Gingrich in a bad moment, cameras have a knack of doing that. On the other hand I don't recall seeing her previously so maybe she always looks that way.

  6. Hopefully not too many people vote on looks.

  7. Guilty, I do vote on looks, at least partly. Some people just look like total prats. I don't think I would get many votes myself, but I it's human nature to form quick impressions [a survival thing that has survived millennia].
That's not the most flattering picture I've seen of Michelle.
The chappie in the middle photo has a rather defeated look, and the jeans look atrocious.
The couple in the last photo look just plain weird. They are aliens from a planet that needs a new colony.

  8. Oh good heavens! That last photo is just scary! If I had to see that daily, I'd be a jibbering idiot in no time.

  9. Christ-on-a-bike, if her face was pulled up any tighter she'd have just the one eye in the back of her head!

  10. ....I wouldn't mind knowing what drugs she's on though

  11. Of course Victor. Every bad photo of me has been when I have been caught at a bad moment. I am sure it is the same for you.

Diane, in this case I hope they do and vote for the normal looking Barack.

  12. FruitCake, surely you don't go for the cave man theory, like I do when it suits my purpose. The jeans look modern, which is perhaps not quite for someone his age.

Whichever one you are referring to River, yes.

Kath, I thought drugs immediately, but no, as you say, her skin is pulled back so tightly that her face cannot move.

  13. You couldn't base your vote on looks, how would you, they're all slightly deranged looking, just some more so than others!

  15. LMAO every time I see Newt's wife I burst out laughing. She looks like a spooked owl.

  16. With skin tighter than any drum skin you may have seen.

  17. So far in my reading catch up after more than a week of indifferent access, this last photo is the MOST scary of all!
