Looks like The George Hotel in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda is getting a coat of paint. While I quite liked the peeling paint, shabby chic will no longer do for Fitzroy Street.

In behind the shops is a nice old looking building.....well behind the tram that inconveniently arrived as my shutter opened. Anyone know what the building is? It has a walkway through to Fitzroy Street.

That is a nice mansion that would of once had a garden facing Fitzroy st which I guess now is converted into apartments and where there garden was is now shops, perhaps there is a laneway there too?
Well Ian I've just seen this after my comment on the posting below, it's probable the buildings along Fitzroy Street were mostly residential.
Ian and Robert, I will take a look next time. A tram was coming and I wanted to catch it.
Wow, I do not know what that building is but I would like to know. I wonder who lived there and what it looks like inside :)
When I was a boy there was a saying 'A good soldier never looks behind', on Fitzroy Street we never looked up, anything useful was on the ground.
Finding out about it is now my mission Cazzie.
I think there are other mansions still standing on that strip of Fitzroy st, behind the restaurant Monroes I think there is one too?
Looks like I better walk the back streets of St Kilda Ian.
Its the old French Embassy ("Brooklawn" 91-97 Fitzroy Street) now apartments. http://www.skhs.org.au/SKHSbuildings/18.htm Architect is unknown. Part of a series of four mansions now built out by shops ...
Thanks Sean. I have been back and taken a look. Another post at some point. French Embassy is a surprise.
