Taxis Off Swanston Street

This morning I saw a taxi pull up to the kerb in Swanston Street, the driver opened his door immediately, straight into the path of a cyclist who crashed hard into the door and fell off his bike. It is not the first time I have seen this happen. I don't think the cyclist was too badly hurt.

Meanwhile City of Melbourne does nothing to protect cyclists from stupid taxi drivers. It is great that so many people are cycling now, but why are they not given some protection. City of Melbourne has gotten rid of most of the large tourist coaches but ridding the street of the airport and mini buses hasn't happened as it was supposed to.

They are less of a problem. Nothing beats taxis for dangerous and illegal driving, danger to cyclists and pedestrians, illegal parking and disruption of trams travelling along Swanston Street.

There is no reason why taxis need to be in Swanston Street. They can quite satisfactorily use the adjacent streets or the east west streets.

City of Melbourne and Victoria Police either cannot or will not enforce present regulations and laws, so I have no faith in any law or bylaw change to remedy the problem.

That is why I am a member of TOSS. Taxis Off Swanston Street. Ban them.

You should accompany me and #1 daughter as we walk, yes walk (one of the last remaining quarries for blood sport playing motorists) daughter and grand daughter to primary school each morning.

Parents in Toorak tanks double park, open doors into oncoming traffic to deliver Tarquin, Oscar, Jaydette and Princess Fifi Trixibelle to school.

  3. most of the trouble i've had whilst cycling has been from taxis. They don't seem to care about bike lanes, drifting in and out, parking across them, making life a little more annoying. I fully support TOSS, exterminate, exterminate!

  4. Thanks for the plug!

I've got a feeling those yellow perils will be in for a shock when the council goes ahead with the closing of Swanston St. Mind you, it'll only send them to other areas of the city. One street at a time, I say!

  5. LS, nothing to say but 'book 'em Danno'. Not sure how children used to get to school before Toorak tanks.

Fenz, fill your pockets with stones. They deserve it.

  9. All good things come to those who wait.

Just yesterday one cut me off and turned illegally into Lt Lonsdale St (NO RIGHT TURN written in English). And they want our respect...

  10. Taxis are a bit dangerous in the city. Here at home there is no real problem...but you have only got to look at the drivers...I have had taxi drivers in Melbourne and sydney who don't seem to know where major arterial roads are and don't seem to be able to read the directory...as in read Engllish...and the smells in some of them are unbelievable...and then you get good ones who can't do enough...its got to do with attitude...at least they know where Swanson street is... thats a plus
