The Hoppins

Something big was happening in Newcastle, England while we were there. I kept hearing about the Hoppins but also the Moor. I sat back and waited for it to become clear.

There are so many places I would like to see and people to meet, after I have already been to England and may never go again. I missed the Hoppings, as it is correctly called, even though we were there. Seen one fair, seen them all.

Here is a cut and paste from Wikpedia

The Hoppings is held on the Town Moor in Newcastle upon Tyne during the last week in June. It is said to be Europe's largest travelling fun fair.

What it is, is a coming together of all the fairs in Europe in one place. I think they are mostly operated by Gypsies, except in England, they are called 'travellers'.

One niece of R's took her three kiddies and spent £130.

While we were there, there was a bit of a ruckas between the fair and the council over clean up costs. The previous year it rained and the moor ended up a quagmire. Who pays?

  1. "I think they are mostly operated by Gypsies, except in England, they are called 'travellers'."

No, travellers are a different race entirely. Gypsies speak the Romany language and travel round the country with their fairs. Travellers are more like sink estates on wheels and, by a horrible irony, refuse to travel anywhere.

  2. Sink estates? So travellers are tinkers, or the modern day equivalent? There were some travellers in Newcastle and they took over a car park.

Travellers are from Ireland but they speak a different lanaguage -'Shelta'. Like the Romany, they encounter a lot of prejudice and they're nomadic lifestyle is not encouraged but many of them do still travel a bit. Vik.

  4. Surprised you know about that Vik. So they are like Gypsies then.

Ah, you'd be amazed at the things I know!! Actually, I watched a video a few months ago about a Traveller fair. It was produced by a group of Traveller kids and was quite interesting.

Travellers are like Gypsies in as much as they also have traditionally led a nomadic life but as mentioned by Brian, they are a different ethnic group with a different language and culture. Vik.

  6. I would not be amazed Vik. I am never surprised by how much a person who reads knows.
